When an opening is too wide for a single fire door, specifying a pair can seem straightforward: take two fire-rated doors, fit them into the same frame and you have a double fire door.

Unfortunately, it is not quite that simple.

A double fire door is a complete fire-resisting assembly in its own right. The two leaves need to work together, particularly where they meet in the centre, and every relevant component needs to fall within the evidence supporting that particular configuration.

That makes specifying a fire-rated pair different from specifying a conventional single fire door.

For contractors, specifiers, facilities teams and anyone ordering replacement doors, understanding those differences before manufacture can prevent expensive problems later.

What Is a Double Fire Door?

A double fire door — sometimes described as a fire-rated door pair — consists of two door leaves installed within one opening.

Depending on the specification, pairs may be available with ratings such as:

  • FD30, designed to provide at least 30 minutes of fire resistance when tested as the relevant assembly

  • FD60, designed to provide at least 60 minutes

  • Smoke-control configurations where supported by the appropriate evidence

  • Solid or glazed leaves

  • Standard or bespoke sizes

  • Different veneer, laminate or paint-grade finishes

Double fire doors are commonly used where a wider clear opening is needed, including commercial corridors, communal areas, educational buildings, healthcare environments and other larger openings.

But the important point is that the fire performance relates to the complete configuration, not simply the rating printed on each individual leaf.

Why Two Certified Single Doors Do Not Automatically Make a Certified Pair

Fire doors are tested as systems.

That system can include the:

  • Door leaf

  • Frame or lining

  • Intumescent seals

  • Smoke seals where required

  • Hinges

  • Closers

  • Locks and latches

  • Bolts

  • Glazing system

  • Meeting stile arrangement

  • Other ironmongery

  • Fixings and installation details

When you introduce a second door leaf, you also introduce something a normal single doorset does not have:

the meeting point between the two leaves.

During a fire, this central junction must resist the passage of fire — and, where required, smoke — while both leaves remain correctly located within the frame.

That is why a pair should be specified as a tested or assessed pair configuration, rather than assuming two independently rated leaves can simply be combined on site.

The Meeting Stile Is One of the Most Important Differences

The vertical edges where the two leaves meet are known as the meeting stiles.

They may look like a relatively minor detail, but they play an important role in the performance of a double doorset.

Different certified systems may use different arrangements, including square or rebated meeting stiles and specific seal configurations.

The permitted arrangement should come from the evidence supporting the doorset.

Changing the meeting stile construction, machining it differently or adding components that are not covered by the relevant certification can affect the performance of the assembly.

This is another reason why site teams should avoid treating a fire-rated pair as ordinary joinery that can simply be adjusted until it fits.

Active and Inactive Leaves

Not every double door operates in the same way.

Some pairs have two leaves that are regularly used. Others are configured with:

  • an active leaf, which functions as the main everyday door; and

  • an inactive leaf, which normally remains secured but can be opened when the full width of the doorway is required.

This arrangement can affect the specification of locks, bolts, closers and other ironmongery.

If an inactive leaf is being used, the method of securing it should be compatible with the tested or assessed fire door configuration.

The required operation of the doors should therefore be established before ordering, not decided once the doors arrive on site.

Do Both Leaves Need Door Closers?

Self-closing requirements depend on the door's location, purpose and applicable fire strategy.

Where self-closing devices are required, the hardware needs to reliably return the leaves to their correct closed position.

With certain double-door arrangements, closing sequence also matters.

For example, where the construction of the pair means one leaf needs to close before the other, an appropriate door coordinator or selector may form part of the system.

Installing two closers without considering how the leaves interact can result in the doors meeting incorrectly or failing to close completely.

The correct closer and any sequencing requirements should therefore be confirmed against the specification and supporting evidence.

Ironmongery Cannot Be Chosen in Isolation

Fire door ironmongery often needs to satisfy more than one requirement.

A single double doorset could involve:

  • Hinges

  • Door closers

  • Locks or latches

  • Flush bolts

  • Panic or emergency-exit hardware

  • Handles

  • Protection plates

  • Door coordinators

  • Signage

  • Intumescent protection for certain components

Hardware can introduce additional openings and weaknesses into the door leaf, which is why compatibility matters.

The safest approach is to specify ironmongery as part of the doorset, rather than purchasing the leaves first and allowing different components to be selected later without reference to the fire test evidence.

What About Glazed Double Fire Doors?

Glazed fire-rated pairs can provide natural light, visibility and a more open appearance while maintaining the required fire separation when correctly specified.

However, glazing creates another set of variables.

A certified glazed fire door system may place limits on:

  • Glass type

  • Maximum aperture dimensions

  • Number of apertures

  • Position of glazing

  • Bead material and profile

  • Intumescent glazing materials

  • Fixing methods

  • Distance between the glazing and edges of the leaf

This becomes particularly important with bespoke designs.

A drawing may look perfectly reasonable architecturally while falling outside the tested scope of the doorset.

For larger projects, agreeing the glazing configuration before manufacture can avoid redesigns and delays later.

FD30 or FD60 Double Fire Doors?

Choosing between an FD30 double fire door and an FD60 double fire door should not be based simply on which product offers the higher number.

The required rating should come from the building's fire strategy, specification and applicable requirements for that opening.

FD30 and FD60 systems can also differ physically.

An FD60 door leaf, for example, will commonly be thicker and may require different frame sections, seals, glazing systems or ironmongery arrangements from an FD30 product.

Upgrading from FD30 to FD60 is therefore not always as simple as replacing the leaves while keeping everything else unchanged.

The complete opening should be considered.

The Frame Matters Just as Much as the Doors

A certified door leaf installed into an unsuitable frame does not automatically create a compliant fire doorset.

For a double door, the frame needs to accommodate:

  • The correct overall opening

  • Both door leaves

  • Required clearances

  • Appropriate frame sections

  • Hinges and ironmongery

  • Intumescent and smoke seals where specified

  • The correct fixing and sealing method to the surrounding wall construction

One of the most effective ways to reduce compatibility issues is to specify the door leaves, frame and associated components together wherever possible.

Bespoke Double Fire Doors Need Early Planning

Older buildings and refurbishment projects rarely offer perfect standard-sized openings.

That makes bespoke fire doors extremely useful, but it also means accurate information becomes even more important.

Before requesting a quotation for a bespoke pair, try to establish:

  • Required fire rating

  • Structural opening dimensions

  • Required finished doorset dimensions

  • Wall thickness

  • Internal or external application

  • Required clear opening

  • Single or double action where relevant

  • Active and inactive leaf requirements

  • Glazing layout

  • Finish

  • Required ironmongery

  • Smoke-control requirements

  • Any accessibility or escape-route requirements relevant to the project

Providing this information early allows the proposed configuration to be checked before manufacturing begins.

One of the Biggest Mistakes: Altering the Pair on Site

A doorset that has been correctly specified at manufacture can still encounter problems if significant unapproved alterations are made during installation.

Potential problems include:

  • Excessive trimming

  • Changing the meeting stile

  • Cutting new glazing apertures

  • Installing incompatible locks or bolts

  • Changing seals

  • Incorrect hinge positions

  • Adding ironmongery without checking the evidence

  • Creating excessive gaps between the leaves

  • Using an unsuitable frame

The fact that a modification looks small does not necessarily mean it is insignificant to fire performance.

Where changes are needed, they should be checked against the manufacturer's certification or supporting technical evidence before work proceeds.

What Should You Confirm Before Ordering a Fire-Rated Pair?

A useful rule is to think about the whole opening, rather than simply asking for "two FD30 doors".

Before placing an order, confirm:

1. Fire rating
FD30, FD60 or another specified performance requirement.

2. Opening dimensions
Accurate measurements are essential, particularly for bespoke work.

3. Door operation
Will both leaves be used regularly, or will there be an active and inactive leaf?

4. Meeting stile
The arrangement should match the tested or assessed system.

5. Smoke requirement
Confirm whether smoke control is required and whether the specified configuration has the necessary evidence.

6. Ironmongery
Closers, hinges, locks, bolts and other components should be compatible with the doorset.

7. Glazing
Confirm aperture sizes, locations, glass and glazing system before manufacture.

8. Frame specification
The frame or lining needs to be suitable for the rating and particular doorset.

9. Certification and documentation
Make sure the finished assembly remains traceable to the relevant supporting evidence.

A Fire Door Pair Should Be Specified as a System

The main principle is simple:

Do not think of a double fire door as two products. Think of it as one fire-resisting system with two moving leaves.

The meeting stiles, frame, seals, hardware, glazing and installation all contribute to how that system performs.

Getting those details right during specification is generally far easier — and less expensive — than trying to correct an incompatible arrangement once the doors have been manufactured or installed.
